Bollywood star Akshay Kumar was arrested
MUMBAI : Bollywood star Akshay Kumar was arrested on Monday on suspicion of obscene behaviour during a Mumbai fashion show in March.
A complaint had been lodged against the "Padmashri" actor and his wife, Twinkle Khanna, after he strutted down the catwalk at Lakme Fashion Week, stopped in front of his wife who was seated in the audience, and asked her to undo his trousers. Kumar was a brand ambassador for Levi's "Unbuttoned" range.
Kumar, 41, has apologised for his actions and surrendered himself to the police after he returned to India after filming abroad. His wife was arrested and bailed last month.
"He was arrested under section 294 of Indian Penal Code and was given bail," assistant commissioner of police Arvind Mahdadi told AFP.
"The news blew up when I was away," joked the actor in an interview with Hindustan Times newspaper,
"I just want to make it home from the airport without my car being egged by all those who have never been unbuttoned by their wives."
India's obscenity laws are punishable by a maximum of two years' imprisonment and a fine of 2,000 rupees (US$39).
In 2007, a court issued arrest warrants for Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty and Hollywood star Richard Gere after he kissed her at an AIDS awareness event, but the case was eventually thrown out.From:www.channelnewsasia.com
